k9 - 10/30/06
k9 or point 6242 has to be one of the best vantage points, if not the best, in this area. It proved to be a pretty fun fall snow scramble.
Since it had just turned to daylight savings time, we got a relatively late start, a 8 something. There was snow almost every step of the trip. We took the easy tunnel creek trail to hope lake and took a right heading south on the pct. At about 5100’, about 1/3 mile se of k9 we headed up finding an easy notch between the minor cliffs while heading to the ridgeline a few hundred yards west of the summit. Once on the ridge we pushed through some brush (rather than travelling the open terrain a few feet below) until we reached the summit. The open terrain would have been preferable if there was no snow, or if there was more snow. but as is often the case, there was not enough snow to kick good steps in, but just enough to be slippery and requiring care. A little cloudy, but great views. We headed back down to hope lake. My buddies continued on past mig lake and went up lux – point 5650 while I headed back to the car. They returned via headlamp about 6:30. Fun trip :>)
Nice!
What happened to all the red, yellow, orange, and green colors?
Are you using one of those new lens filters that puts a coat of snow on every thing?
Did you find Fay Pullen's summit register on K9 and Lux?
Looks like one heck of fun trip for this time of year, thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
Richard
thanks for the kind words natural being. we looked for fay's registers, but with over a foot of snow, our search was unsuccessful.
yes there was plenty of red, yellow and other colors, it was just covered with a white powdery substance with the consistency of sugar, although it did not taste as sweet. new camera for 06 with lens filter material: smoke from fires, debris from 70+ summits, tons of perspiration ...
Zowie! What a magnificent viewing platform! Bet your fingers were freezing!
These shots really give me a sense of excitement! What a view! I love Thunder and its environs. Splendid peaks and all!
That is some condensate between lenses? Happens to me, too. I like to use a polarizer over a skylight filter. That protects the Nilon lens. Unfortunately, the camera slipped from my hands on the beach last winter and sand left scratches on the polarizer. Have you ever priced a polarizer filter. Whew! Replacement would be and will be prohibitive.
Recent phots with the damaged filter do not show much problem; I am sure if the photos were enlarged, the evidence woould be there.
Even so, I now know that the camera is still in working order and my recent (end of September) trips to just below your photo; and to Trap Lake (2nd trip) had successful photos. Someday, I will post a few.
Thank you for the trip. I loved it! And, my hands are still warm!
