Hardware firewalls may be overkill, but they're another layer of protection and not all that expensive, really. I'm not talking about high-end equipment doing stateful inspection of every network packet coming through, but something simple like a Linksys BEFSR41 that can do NAT and have minimal ports open to prying eyes.

Pop-up Stopper is great, imo. If you wanna open a new window, hold down Control while clicking the link.
I think I've found something much more user friendly than pop-up stopper. It's called "free surfer" and it's smart enough to allow links to open up in a new window. Better yet, you don't even see the unrequested pop up windows before they get killed.

You want the free surfer mk II (freeware). The companion isn't free (shareware) but if their cookie washer is as good as their popup stopper I might be tempted to send them the $20. Here is a more direct link to the free download:
