Alison Krauss described it as acoustic heavy metal. The vocal style is very distinct and takes a lot of getting used to, but many virtuoso instrumentalists in the genre.
Slug, you have likely already seen the yout vid of her Lay Down. I like her shut-down when the host tries to get her to talk about herself, and she says, "I'd like to just talk about the song, please."
And I was pleasantly surprised to see this video; Melanie and Miley Cyrus, who showed herself to be a pretty darn good artist (the song gets better near the end).

Here's something a little heavier. Animals As Leaders have to be one of the most technically proficient and interesting rock bands out there right now. Matt Garstka is a monster on drums, while Tosin Abassi is redefining rock guitar. Poor old Javier Reyes - no slouch in his own right - has the unenviable job of rounding out the trio. Oh yeah, both guitarists play 8-string guitars, there's no bassist in the group.
