After having two gorillapods break on me (one at the head and one at the hip) I'm in the market for a new tripod. In addition to taking it hiking it needs to be able to hold a small (MiniDV) video camera.
Anybody have experience with the Carson The Rock Original Tripod?

(I have an REI gift card so I'd love to buy one from REI if there's a good product, but I'm sure I could be convinced to buy something else instead. ) |

From REI, I'd check out the Ultrapod 2 for a small, cheap, little tripod. It's designed to be lashed to things as well as be used as a tripod.
Another small compact one that I have used and liked (though it's too small for a DSLR with anything more than a small lens. I really like this style, but I keep breaking them (usually by stepping on them when the monopod is extended)
In the past I have hiked with a bogen 3001 which is great for it's flexibility. Bogen's have been workhorses and are GREAT tripods.
Shot of me using one, I like separated legs for adaptability.
And what I was shooting
I currently use a Benbo Trekker while hiking. It's has MASSIVE amounts of flexibility. If you're in the local area, I could throw it at you to check out. The legs rotate in full circles for the outter 2. It's a strange setup, but I can get it to work anywhere.
I am looking at getting a Cullman Tourist setup |

| Ever try a sandbag? Instead of sand, you could fill a bag with styrofoam beads. Should work about the same. |

| Setting up the Benbo has been described as wrestling with an octopus. I guess it gets easier as you get used to it. People love 'em or hate 'em. |
