HI,

My Wife and I tried to reach Lester today unsuccessfully.  Can you give us some detailed directions on how to get there?

Thanks!

Jeff, I have never been there. I believe that you must drive or hike over Stampede Pass and the road is gated below. Hike on the old road into town. That is all I know. Good luck.

Welcome to the site Jeff.  The Schrod gave you good directions.  Might want to wait for summer.

My wife is hinting around about wanting to go into Lester this coming Sunday. With the windstorm and snow and all do you guys think it's a good idea or should we save it for later next year?

I wouldn't. Getting over Stampede Pass will likely be a problem. You might make it over, but probably not.

The real question,  is it worth killing a tank or 2 of gas for a "might make the destination" trip?

When it comes to public use of watershed land Tacoma isn't the only intransigent party.  Seattle should open the Cedar River watershed rail bed to hiking and biking.  The entire Seattle watershed should be open to special permit hunting and fishing.

But that won't happen as it is now Indian hunting grounds where they can drive the roads and hunt from the roads. Exclusive rights what a crock!!

Agree that it should be open, but Seattle is worse about it than Tacoma. Seattle has it more or less locked down at the topographical boundary whereas Tacoma at least lets you drop over Stampede Pass and into that basin. You can get to a few places like Snowshoe Butte, Kelly Butte, Meadow Mtn, Sawmill Ridge etc via the Green River side. Also, my understanding is that Tacoma lets hunters into the watershed (do they have to blue bag it?) whereas Seattle doesn't let any hunters in. Save for possibly some Indians.

City of Tacoma has removed all remaining buildings and remnants from Lester this Spring "for public safety and watershed security".  There's nothing left to see.

Schroder,

Does this include the McGee cabin and the old shop building next to the railroad wye, or was it just the Forest Service buildings?

Do you think this means they will stop access in the future because nothing is there?
