After being mesmerized last week by Deception Falls I ended up going back yesterday to hike up the Deception Creek trail for more of the same. The hike is moderate and very scenic. It starts a short ways from the Deception Falls restrooms and nature trail -- a little east turn onto Road No. 6088 and in less than a half mile find the trailhead. The first half mile of the trail follows the creek -- or torrent I should say. Then just before a bridged crossing the trail enters the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The bridge is new and fun to walk across. From there the trail climbs and continues for 5 miles though I didn't get that far. I figure I hiked about 4 miles and passed several great campsites by the river/streams. Lots of waterfalls and little side paths leading to overlooks. Some flowers including marsh marigolds and many yellow violets. If you hike to the high point of the trail it's about 1,200 feet gain. On the way back I noticed a side trail going off near the new bridge -- had to see where it went. It goes to part of the old bridge -- that was interesting to see. The old bridge is a fat log, flat on the top, with little trees growing along the edges. The old bridge looked fine but it didn't span all the tributaries which is probably why they put in another bridge. Apparently some of the old bridges washed out a lot. Beautiful trail with lots of options. No big views but splendid old growth forest and high drama with the snow melt.
