What a difference a day makes! Yesterday Jim K and Sadie's Driver set a trench in horrible weather to about the 3800ft. level. Today we were joined by Joe, Joanna, and Brad, with the intent on continuing to the summit. The trench made yesterday was covered with several inches of fresh snow! In a few areas we couldn't even tell that anyone had been up here the previous day. But as we climbed higher, the trench became more evident. Beyond the end of their effort, we plowed through knee deep snow, happy that there were 5 of us to take turns breaking trail. The weather was fantastic! We stayed dry all the way to the summit, had local views, and no wind. Lunch break at the top was very comfortable.

Two white dogs, without counting their mother. Joanna: if this is your older white (the prodigal daughter) I'm happy she's made full recovery. Impressive achievement, guys. 2dd

Glad you had good weather up.gif I've been up Dirty Harry's a few times myself but never realized it was 11miles R/T!?!? Can that be right? I always assumed it was about 7 or 8? No wonder it makes me feel tired - I thought it was just that road (which I've sworn to never go up again, at least for a few months lol.gif )

I'm not always sure I like being older but being less stupid has advantages. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32121172@N00/sets/

Dicey, according to the book it is 11 miles RT, but it doesn't seem that long to us either. But it is definitely 3400ft. of gain. It was a good choice for today considering the conditions.

Glad to see you put yesterday's work to good use. I think we yanked a few dozen blocking trees out of the snow and pushed them back vertical. Our gloves were thoroughly soaked by the time we turned around. Fun walking in running water with snowshoes on? At about 2:30, on my way home today I pulled in to where we parked yesterday. It was raining pretty steadily. Did you get down before the rain started?

Jim, we had good weather. We even had to put on sunglasses at the summit! It started snowing lightly just as we started down, and turned to rain the last mile out. Good timing!

In the photo Views-4 you can see the cabin on the left end of the ridge. At 800 x 600 it is hard to see it clearly.

Hey TDD: You should get out there with us and help break trail! The big white dog is a not mine, he's a foster dog looking for a good home.

What do you know about the cabin? From a distance, it was hard to determine what the structure was on the ridge. A Photoshop cropped, closeup of the cabin.

I've been to the cabin-its a very strange structure sitting on top of stilts.

Dirty Harry's summit
Wow! These are choice photos. The snow is gorgeous. I am drooling...can't you see? Gosh....what a dandy 11 miles you all did! The cabin atop the far ridge beyond Granite Lakes that has the view down to the little lakes nestled in Russian Butte? It is an odd one. How did it get built? Who owns it? Does it get used? The doors are all on the second story...so you can walk in when the snow is deep. There does nt seem enough room for a heli-pad. The dogs are handsome. YUP...I am a dog nut.
