What color of Rooster Tail do you use to catch a Gold Trout? Before you say "he uses a treble hooked Rooster Tail to catch a Gold Trout!!!" Rest assured that I cut 2 hooks off and pinch the barb on the 3rd hook for CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY up.gif I will be fishing in the Wind Rivers-Bridger Wilderness for 8 days this July biggrin.gif and I have never fished for Gold Trout before. Any help will be useful. Also we still have room for 1 person to go with us. tongue.gif July 19-29.

There's such a thing as gold trout? Man, you do learn something new everyday!

I've caught hybrid cutthroats/golden in Montana on black rooster tails--I really only use black so other colors might work and on gold Kastmasters. I saw people catching some rainbow plants on pink rooster tails the other day-probably should give other colors a try I guess.

It really depends on what the goldens are feeding on that day. I'd take a variety of lures to cover all your bases. Black is my favorite color of Rooster Tail. Also red/brass. I'd take some spoons. Krocodiles up to 1/4 ounce. Go for brass with a red stripe. Goldens can be very finicky. I'd also go prepared with a bubble and flies so in case they aren't hitting hardware. Goldens will sometimes congregate in one area. You have to prospect all around a lake to find where they are sitting. Be sure to approach protected areas along shorelines very carefully because they will often be cruising right at the shore. If they aren't showing at all they are sure to be deep. Put on one of those heavy Krocs and let it sink all the way to the bottom along deep rock slides. By July 19 everything should be open and warming nicely. Watch for the afternoon thunder showers and have a good time.

Hey Lead Dog, I don't actually eat vegetables. I just drill a hole in 'em for sport, then throw the buggers back.

Any hurt a fish feels will pale in comparison to when the shark swallows him. Right now I'm trying to avoid stepping on termites.

Some pretty funny posts here, you'all are crackin' me up! Have yet to land a golden, but had the good fortune to yank one around once in the ALW. My boss read about some experiments with trout and the pain they experienced when hooked and yanked around.....he thought he might quit fishin'....sounds like more fish for me! You may want to check out Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes, Gary LaFontaine 1998, Greycliff. Written about his flyfishing experiences in the Rockies, it has lots of info about fish behavior and fishing strategies that could apply to spincasting.

If I'd known ya was gonna use bait I wouldn't a brought ya!

Hey, it's one thing to nab a fishie and eat it, to satisfy Indian gods. But another to yank us out for sport, then throw us back. Hey, another cool sport is throwing rocks down cliffs onto goats! Way cool fun.
