Whoever shot the photos (it appears three contributed), all did an incredibly fine job.  Sitting here viewing all these splendid scenes was almost "thrilling".  Imagine....I am nice and toasty warm and looking at the hiker-climber work on what appears to be a chill and windy day.

There are more than several shots that are "drop dead gorgeous"!  Often the dramatic cornices contribute to the spectacle.  I am envious beyond belief!  I hope all who "conquered" and returned to Planet Earth will cherish this trip you are now sharing.

Last summer I found the "back door" way trail to Paradise Meadow.  Over and over I contemplated a scramble up Townsend.  For years I have examined topos of that place.  What wonder I have now seen by viewing the magical place through your eyes and the lens of your cameras.

Benthebeerman....great shots!  Merchant looks regal in your pix as does, of course, Baring.  Wonderful sun break for your photo-taking.  Does the Barclay Cr. bridge looked a bit moved?  I crossed it on three hikes last year...don't recall it was crooked.  Thank you for adding your photos.

Oh, yes...I want to add:  I could not shake the photo images from my head last night or this morning.  The summit of Townsend proved a great location to take glorious photos of a grand sweep of wintery spring alps.  Thank you all again for sharing your remarkable adventure.

You guys are killing me with all of your recent trips. Looks like everyone had another stellar trip.

IMO Townsend  is best experienced when the E-W ridge is lapping with snow covered waves.

Just for reference, the images posted as Merchant Peak (5,831') are indeed listed as such on the GTM and USGS quad, but as Beckey notes in his green CAG, "the true summit is 3/8 mi. NW" and tops off at 6,113'.

On September 14th 1998,  I made the E summit via the SE ridge, coming from Eagle Lake, there was one rock step that was exposed and would defiantly maim if not end ones life if a person were to slip there. My best guess judging from everyones pics,  with the amount of snow, and it's steepness, is that step would be a deal breaker at this time of year.

Cheers!
Richard

Never trust any directions I give regarding east and west.  Always check the map.  In my earlier contribution to this TR, 7 out of 7 places where I wrote "west" were actually supposed to be "east."  One time I led an entire party around the wrong side of Tower Mountain.  I knew we were supposed to curve west, but I went east instead.  This was right after I got up early and watched the sun rise right next to the mountain.  Apparently I thought that the sun rises in the west.
