Here is the second part of the trip--Whatcom pass-Challenger area. The 1984 trip we went over the top of Whatcom. I have included two other trips one in 1974 to Whatcom pass and then a climb of Challenger via the Eiley-Wiley lake route. And one in 2002 Mineral Mtn easy ridge to Challenger. The following are of Whatcom peak from east of the pass

My next series of slide scans are from the South Cascade Glacier area. Made two trips there. One was Aug 1977--when the USGS was working on the glacier and the trail was a supper hwy and a bunkhouse on the ridge. Then again in Aug 1986 continuing on to Dome peak. The dates are on the pictures as I am grouping according to the Glacier. This is the un-named glacier just west as you get to the lake

I posted an assessment of Redoubt Glacier. This is taking advantage of the nice photographs from Dalekz I will turn to Dome and Dana Glacier in a few weeks. A view of the glacier in Google Earth from 2009 with the 1978 USGS map margin is in green.

Over the lasts two years one glacier at a time I have chronicled the retreat of glaciers around the world. Many from Washington and British Columbia. The index page contains links to all 108 glaciers. The most recent is the spectacular retreat of Columbia Glacier from the Columbia Icefield in Alberta and BC. This is not to be confused with our own North Cascade Columbia Glacier, where we are given a past, present and future view.

Kbatku posted an article on the significant loss in area of Mount Adams glaciers from a Portland State study in the Yakima Herald. This is the same message we get from just about any watershed in the northwest fed by glaciers. Maybe it is the Elwha or the Skykomish same thing

Recently found and scanned some negatives of photos I took on a trip across the Olympics in 1965, including some glacier shots. Have included a few modern comparison shots:

That is great love the shot of Eel Glacier. The retreat of McAllister Glacier is interesting now.

The McAllister article reminded me of the ones I took of the glacier from Backbone ridge in August 1999 on the half day it cleared out.

In putting together a family hiking DVD, I was able to gain access to one of my early climbing partners slides to combine with my climbing slides. ( another partner still has his in the boxes of 36 stored in a paper bag this is 30 years worth). He did a climb of Glacier going up the Kennedy Glacier in September 1972. (Do not remember why I was not on it). He said I could post them here. I am trying to get him to be a member here. The following pics were taken By R Luce. Kennedy Glacier

Notice how much snow still remained on the north facing sides after the summer was over.
