Nice Dale here are pictures of the Kennedy and Scimitar terminus from 1994 and 1997.
The glaciers had both retreated about 100 meters from their 1979 advance moraines. The vegetation line in 1997 image is pretty much the advance position.

Examination of retreat of Deming Glacier showing changes of the Icefall and terminus. Eel Glacier retreat as well, particularly of side glacier feed in. This summer we plant to explore the changes at the top of the Deming Icefall in detail.

Article at Skeptical Science providing detailed overview of the High Asian mountain glacier changes over the last several decades. This is an expanded version of what I put together for the Bulletin American Meteorological Society State of the Climate 2011 publication out this summer

Mauri, that Skeptical Science link isn't working. First I got a 'timed out' notice. Then, when I tried to copy the link, I got an 'unknown error' message. ..... Is it just me, or is there really something wrong? And if there is, can you fix it?

It's working, now, and thanks. It's always a pleasure to see the facts clearly set out, with real numbers and definitive statements that no one could possibly misunderstand. hmmm.gif As for Big Four, I have to combine a good day with good health. I will get out there, but I'm sorry not to be able to push it, not to be able to do it dependably ..... It's a unique place and a proper record ought to be kept, but it won't any longer be by me. frown.gif

I think old pics in Beckey's older guides show a much longer snout on the Suiattle. I'll have to look.

It's not guilt, it's empathy

This summer we will be joined in the field by Peter Sinclair at Easton Glacier who works on several video series, including one for the Yale Climate forum.

Good stuff. I've learned to love the ice worms. peltoms, as you likely know, there has been significant retreat on the N flank of the Suiattle Glacier just W of Kopeetah Divide. The map shows a glacier where there is now a big melted out rocky spot with an established climber's camp. You may have been there. The N flank of the Suiattle next to that camp has become a bit of a blue ice cliff. We named the camp "The Parabola" because it's sort of dish-shaped and gets a good solar cooking on sunny summer days. Not sure, but the camp might be in the right center of your pic. Thanks for posting this stuff, peltoms!

The end of the accumulation arrived right on schedule on May 1, though it may not feel like it this week. A synopsis of the season from a glaciers perspective.

thanks for the update. it's always hard to want good early season weather while knowing the glaciers are paying the price for it. maybe this cool trend, and our upcoming junuary, will slow it down.

For what it's worth, out of curiosity, I made a graph of the five year averages of the April Water Equivalents. Each year is in the middle of the 2 years before and the two years after (1986 is the label for the averages of the years 1984-1988). Each five year average went forward only one year at a time (1984-1988 --> 1985-1989 --> 1986-1990, and so on). It only goes to 2011 since that is in the middle of the years 2009-2013). Here is the graph of the five year averages:
