Mt Si via the Old Trail, 5/3/07 The benchmark hike for TNAB is Mt Si, via the old trail. The old trail is quirky, direct, and much less crowded than the official trail. Fourteen TNAB'ers and five canines showed up to give it a try under uncertain conditions: the weather looked like it could dump rain at any minute! Dramatis Personae: Yours Truly Yet Tisha & Jeremy (Schmidt Altitude) + two whippets Nikolai (twodogdad) w/Boon & Dock Greg (EastKing) Don (Malachai Constant) Dave Daniel Chris S (CHR15) Chris M (Omega) Carla (dicey) w/Logan Andrew (ADrewzki) Anastasia (cosmickarrot) Huge, billowing clouds piled up behind Mt Si as we headed east to North Bend. Someone mentioned the possibility of a thunder shower - just great! Undaunted, we parked at the old Lil Si lot and started hiking by 5:50 PM. With so many people, the few other hikers we met along the way assumed we must belong to some larger, legitimate organization. HA! Despite the cool temps and overcast skies, the steep grade of the old trail quickly had us taking off extra layers. About halfway up the hill, the temperature became noticeably cooler. Fortunately, the wind did not pick up. By the time we reached the summit area, 105 minutes later, we had effectively climbed into the clouds. Small pellets of hail-like snow littered the ground. The idea of climbing the Haystack was becoming increasingly remote. We gathered at the bench near the scramble area, wolfed down some brownies, and decided to go for it. Besides, CHR15 was already up there, and had rope if things got nasty (!!!). At this point, the hike went to the dogs, literally. Logan easily cleared the first 30 feet of the gully before I'd gone ten. Then one of the whippets basically RAN up to Logan. And somewhere below us, Boon was taking the scenic route down the new trail, without telling twodogdad (he was found later - whew!). Back on the Haystack, several of us continued to make the scramble despite the poor conditions (it's much nicer when it's dry). It was quite the circus! On the summit, visibility was maybe 50 feet. With no reason to stick around, there was nothing left to do but tag it and return to where we left our packs (and the brownies). The down climb was painfully slow for us humanoids, much to the disgust of our canine companions. We finally left the summit area around 8:30 PM, and exited shortly after 10:00 PM. A visit to the NBB&G for grub was a partial success - chips and salsa was all they had left available to eat. Our hungry team went through seven servings! Next Hike: MAILBOX!

Cheers, Mesahchie Mark

Thanks for the trip report Mesahchie Mark. It's always a bummer when the weather doesn't cooperate. The only time I did Mount Si I couldn't see anything either... too foggy.

Pain is just weakness leaving the body.

Yes, any brownie connoisseur know that the corners are the tastiest! Better crust to center ratio.

John, where were you yesterday pretty boy?? At the gym? Hair appointment? lol.gif
I was home being the attentive husband/father. With only a month to go left in the pregnancy (I'm not even showing, huh?) my wife is... um... shall we say "challenged" when it comes to chasing down our daughters. It had been a rough day at home so I opted to score brownie points rather than eat them. It was a good night even if I didn't get out of the house. Someday I'll get up the Haystack...
