I cut my blue foam pad into four 10" x 20" rectangles and taped them together along the long sides to make my own Z-Rest. It makes a perfect "frame" for my frameless pack, but is too small (20" x 40") for a HH.
If the pad you hammock people are discussing is sometihng akin to the Blue Foam Pad (best pad ever), then I have a good packing solution for you, if you are like me and hate the roll on the outside of the pack. Is it BlueFoamPadLike?
Nope, not the same. It's cross link closed cell foam, similar to patented material used in the RidgeRest (but only 1/4" thick). Very high insulation / weight ratio.
DJ, that is similar to what I did, ecept I put velcro tabs on mine so that they all stay together when I'm sleeping on them. Also added tabs tot he bottom of my t-rest so the butt pad can double as a foot pad.
The really good kind of blue foam can be pretty hard to find, but I think it's far superior to anything else, foamwise, that is out there.

www.mec.ca sells high-EVA closed cell foam. It is heavier than blue foam, but it is also supposed to be much more durable and it has a higher R-value. They sell 5, 10 and 15mm thicknesses. The thick pads are about 24" or 25" wide. Unfortunately the thin 5mm "bivy pad" is only 20" wide. Zotte Foam Pads from MEC.
Tom, I have a friend-of-a-friend who works at MSR. He uses unembossed scrap Ridge-Rest material for his pad, pot cozies, etc. etc. Cool stuff.
