I bought a used Ice axe at a pawn shop the other day and it does not have any covers for the blades or the point. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one.

Do you really need one? I never use one... few of my peak-bagging friends do either. In fact, none of them use 'em.

A lot of my hiking is done with Search and Rescue and they are required on the helicopter and I would hate to hurt an injured hiker even more so while carrying them out on a litter. If I was hiking alone most of the time I wouldnt worry about it but I know that when I am following someone with an ice ace on the back of their pack I always check to see if all the sharp points are covered becuase I would hate to lose and eye.

i've seen people use tennis balls, but they don't look very secure. rei used to sell universal-fit rubber covers made by grivel i think.. did you check their catalog?

I have that rubber cover Tom shows for the pick & adze end of the axe- works for me. For the spike end I have the brown REI neoprene triangular cover- it's more secure than a rubber end cap. I think it's good practice to keep those axe parts covered, I've seen too many close calls by clueless people swinging their axes around while strapped to their packs.

I have an old Chouinard leather cover I got years ago. It is completely oiled from sweat and grease and effectively waterproof. It makes it possible to use as a cane on moderate slopes and insulates the axe. It also fits over an old MSR looooooooooooog handle t-bird. up.gif

That does look pretty nice, I ended up making a temporary one out of a piece of Neoprene I cut off an old pair of fishing waders and duck tape, it isnt pretty but it is functional. ps I would still like to find an actual custom cover for it.
