The trail is clear and in good shape for the first two miles; there are good views, big ponderosa pines and some flowers in this section of the trail, too. Slushy soft snow, a foot or two deep, starts at the boulder field, about 2 miles in (so do the mosquitos). We followed footprints easily enough on the snow, but our dog was almost swept away (and into the undersnow passage of the creek) crossing a snow bridge over a creek after the boulder field. Walk upstream a little to where the creek narrows to cross safely (though you still can't see the water beneath the snow). We had a harder time route finding after the creek, and I'd gotten a bit tired of the postholing and slipping, so we turned back before the lake. We looked through binoculars at Alpine Lookout, which appears free of snow, though the rest of Nason Ridge to the east looks to have just a little more snow hugging the ridgeline.
