Last September Randy and I tried to summit both of these peaks but were turned back by threatening weather after reaching Lynch. Today another buddy and I were able to tag both peaks. We chose the peaks because they are marginally east of the Cascade Crest and carried less of a threat of rain then western slopes. We left the parking area for the Cathedral Rock trail at 0800. We encountered snow on the trail at 4400. Our approach brought us past Peggy's Pond where we continued upslope and past just east of Pt. 6350. We did a long traverse to the saddle above Pea Soup Lake being careful to loose only 200 feet elevation. Pea Soup Lake was frozen over with slushy snow on top and we were able to walk on top to reach the SE slope of Dip Top. To climb Dip Top from the south it is easiest if Pea Soup Lake is frozen. The surrounding rock walls do not allow for traversing. We kicked steps up the final 1,000 feet with clouds blocking views of even nearby Lynch Peak. We arrived on top exactly 5 hrs after leaving the car. The original register placed by Gene Prater in 1950 is still there. John R however was kind enough to bring a more waterproof register which houses the papers in a secure and dry container. We dropped down to the saddle and climbed up class 3 rock about 150 feet before swinging around to the southern slopes of Lynch. The angle of ascent is less there and the hike up was without difficulty. Our route back to the car was to traverse over to Deception Pass and then connect with the PCT to get us back to the car. This route is more difficult and time consuming but it engaged us in some lovely forest and made a circle route which is always more interesting. We were back at the car at 1900.
