Why is the government involved in who can and can't get overtime? Shouldn't that be for the companies to decide?

Why does the government involve itself with setting a minimum wage? And from another thread. Why would we look to the government to set the number of vacation days or holidays a company had to provide?

I'm curious what the effects of raising the minimum wage has had. I suspect it has beneited those with minimum wage jobs, but have no proof. Can anyone cite any sources? I think the concept of a minimum wage is good and that one should be able to make more than half a subsistance income on it.

Let's see,
$7.01x8x5x52
= $14,580.80 (total wages)
-$35.00 (trail park pass)
=$14545.80 Not alot.

The answer like anything else is because that is what the congress voted for and it was signed into law. The justification is under the commerce clause and dates back to the 1930's.
Economists differ on whether it is desirable or not with most conserative ones such as friedman saying it is not and more liberal ones saying it is beneficial. It has been tested in the courts and found constutional.
