Ok, I'd rather not go back to my old Asolo Yukons but there are times when I'd feel better wearing crampons. Anyone have any advice about crampons to wear with medium-weight boots? These are a full-leather medium weight Asolo.

I've used the same pair of SMC hinged adjustable 12-point crampons for about 30 years...in fact I think I bought them from one of SMC's first "production runs". They work beautifully with lighter weight boots. I used them with my Vasque Sundowners for the life of that particular set of boots...about 5 years. Unless you are going to get pretty technical, these types of crampons will fill 95% of your needs, in my humble opinion. Obviously, they work on lightweight boots. I remember when I bought my Sundowners, the sales clerk just about fainted when I pulled out my crampons to see how they would match up with the boot sole. eek.gif She wanted to know "where I intended to go" with the Sundowner/SMC combination...I told her that Mount Rainier via the Kautz Glacier was my next trip. She didn't faint, but just went away muttering to herself. rant.gif Right now I use them with my medium weight Asolo AFX535 boots.

definitly the light- weight aluminum crampons that rei sells. they work great for all glaciers. though not so much for ice. and 1/2 the wt. of steel. they will work fine with your boots.used them on baker with my vasques.

In Nepal Porters just wrap hemp cords around tennies and it works pretty good, the cords act like skins freezing to the ice. Sherpa Guides of course wear crampons which are dirt cheap there.

I've used the Stubai aluminum crampons with little more than a stiff running shoe. They have plastic toe and heel parts and a strap that goes through both. Stiff boot unnecessary -- they won't fall off.

If you want the stubai ultralights, Salish and I got them from a merchant in Vancouver, WA with a very good price.

Ordered
My friend Dan and I each ordered a pair of Grivel G-10's. We're paying about $75 including shipping. Thank you!
