Well well where can I start. The bugs were fairly bad and the horseflys constantly buzzed around my head during the whole hike. The thing I reccomend most for this hike is BUG SPRAY!!! It was a really good hike though. The trail was dry and dusty and in great condition. Near the lake you enter a clearing with awesome views of the surrounding mountains. The grass and plants have really grown up and you can just navigate thru all the growth. I made sure to make my presence known didnt want to surprise any critters because you couldnt see them untill you were on top of them . The lake was great and the water was nice and cool. The hike back down was a killer on my knees and thighs one heck of a workout. Near the bottom the mosquitos were horrible they engulfed me for the last .5 mi of the hike . Over all the wagonwheel lake trail is a great hike and an even better workout. Go for it and never stop hiking. You can check out my website for pics from my trip and more.

Cool! You went for the thigh burner delight Next time, go up to Flapjack Lakes as a LONG dayhike - it's well worth it!

I wasn't all that happy with Flapjack Lakes...it was a very dry and dusty dayhike, 16 miles round trip.
Once we got up and off the valley floor it did start to get enjoyable -- the switchbacks were comfortable and the trail made good, steady upward progress with a nice variety of scenery -- but the biting flies were having a heyday that weekend and made our stop at the lake a short one.
On the way back out, we forded at the washed out bridge and walked down the other side of the river...very pretty trail on that side...would have like to continue upstream on that side a bit if we'd had more time. |

The otherside of the skokomish river is very pretty. Well worth as a dayhike!
As for Flapjacks, the best time is to go in June, before all the snow is gone. It is very pretty at that point. But, yes, a long, hot and dusty hike!

| Speaking of hikes on the N Fork Skok trail, the Mt. Lincoln trail has mysteriously reappeared. I think that the park service had it obscured by brush and logs until recently, because I've looked for it before with no luck. Now it's obvious. It's quite apparent on the right of the N Fork trail heading north in a shady section, middle of the Beaver burn area. I'm waiting for someone to report on it or maybe I'll have to do it myself.... |
