The first one is pretty darn close to exactly the same shot. Little different light, but we were in almost the same spot.

Dean what time of year were you there? My pics came from October 15th 1992. It was 85+ degrees the whole time I was there. I ran in over Asgaard that trip. Had 19 pounds on my back and was there three days! Took 30 rolls of film.
Crystal lake!

Hey, with all due respect to all who have posted on this thread (I am on a permit with some other TT regulars) I/we will be going to an area where the crowds won't be a problem...I think the main question here is snowmelt....we will be off the established trail for part or all of our trip...what is the elevation at which we can expect to see dry ground, given annual variations to such? Permit is for early August.

Al, if you guys are going up Rat creek it's got a northern exposure. Some westerly extent but mostly north. I'd think by 8/8 you should be mostly snow free into shield and the lowers.
My 2.3 cents!
Mr. Kleet where was that taken from? Looks like the ridge above nada?

In August the snow will be very consolidated. Snow remains in the upper area until very late in the year. Just hack out a tent platform any where on snow and you'll have a grand camp. I don't recall brush being much up there -- in fact there isn't a lot of vegetation. The upper Enchantments are almost barren of plant life -- they glaciers have been retreating in the past 100 years. I can't speak for getting to the area off-trail...

What about that spur road high on the side of Wedge Mountain? I've been to the summit ridgeline there, and while nasty, it sure looks like one could find a route down into Snow Creek, especially if you were willing to traverse a mile or two looking for a good spot.

That's it MtnGoat. It's a beeeeeyatch, but doable. Only problem is the ever-changing gate situation on the drive up there.

Kleet, where do you access that ridgeline Mr. Baaaaaa is talking about?

I haven't been up there for a couple years, but the gates I saw were on the Mtn Home Road side, and approaching from Hwy 97 and up from the east I never saw any gates.
BPJ, Wedge Mtn is the ridgeline to the E of Snow creek, it's accessible from several roads heading up it's E flank. The one I've been up is the farthest N on the ridge.

The only information I was trolling for was that on snowpack. All the other stuff is easy enough to figure out.

Randy, Think my first response in this thread is pretty accurate. Although there was still plenty of it in mid Aug '99, it wasn't a problem. Hardly anything on the north facing Aasgard. The snow in the upper basin was hard and ideal for fast travel. Have fun!
