Hiked up to Mother Mountain and Faye Peak at MRNP. The Mowich lake road was really washboarded and dusty. The trails to these places aren't official trails, but they are easily followed. Some work has been done at the start to repair erosion damage. Got up to Knapsack pass and enjoyed views of Mt. Rainier. There was a fire over in the Carbon River area, but the smoke was being blown away from us. That was a nice change because the last 3 hikes have been with a nasty smoke smell in the air. Trotted on over Mother Mountain where we found a bunch of weird ants that had wings flying all over the place. They weren't that annoying though. We spotted some people on Faye peak across the valley so we decided to descend from Knapsack pass and head back up to Faye. On the way up to Faye I noticed that my butt was really wet, and I thought I was sweating like crazy. Then I ran out of water and discovered that 35oz of water had drained out of my Platypus bag into my pack. fortunately I had another bag of water in the pack. Despite that issue we made it to the airy top and had lunch. Packed up and headed back to the parking lot at Mowich lake. Nice close in hike with good views.
