The earth is currently in a region of above average density solar wind, with a relatively high velocity (600 km/sec) and all websites show auroral activity right now (8:45 PM Friday) as activity level 10, out of 10! go here to see a real time map.. http://www.sec.noaa.gov/pmap/index.html anyplace it's red on that map there is probably an aurora in progress, so take a look, it's clear outside for now.

Off topic, sorry Hey MtnGoat, just spent a fascinating morning at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. The story that I liked the most was about the guy (Clyde ??) who first found Pluto. He was a farm boy who dreamed about the stars. He made his own telescope and wrote to the Observatory about his stargazing quite often. Studying the photos is extremely tedious, and nobody who worked there wanted to look for the 9th planet (that Lowell predicted based on tedious math). So they hired this guy as a janitor, and after a while taught him how to make the tedious photos and study them. Dang if he didn't find it! What a thrilling, romantic tale. They also figured out the "big bang" at Lowell. Fun stuff, hope you have had fun with your hobby too.
