MaryLou Quote: | I'll try to post some snow porn and a TR on the Larch Lakes in the Entiat in a couple of days. I got a nice one of one of the lakes, a little snowy larch tree action, and one of the great Stefan VonFellerwitz. All fresh this morning, but stale when you see them! Stale is better than fresh, in our opinion. |
I'm looking forward to your TR and pics. I'm enjoying the pics posted by Jim K and Alan Bauer among others. My two trips last year into larch country have made me want to make it an annual pilgrimage. Yes, Temple Canyon is pretty but getting in and out is pure work (and not fun in the snow)

On a thin layer of snow it could be tough, but in dry conditions, going up from Nada Lake to the mouth of Temple Cyn is IMO nothing but fun.

Yes, the up wasn't bad (dry) but I can tell you it wasn't fun with the snow. Still, memories are made of such moments and I'll be back up there next year.

So I'm going to attempt my first trip to the 'chants next week, mon and tue 27/28, via the snow lakes route. I'll be travelling alone, otherwise I'd go via Aasgaard (i take it it is open now?), but not interested in hauling an axe along or that kind of risk. Anyone know about the snow? Boy it dump the liquid here, I'm afraid it might've dumped the powder there!

Yesterday a friend of mine was up in there via Aasgard Pass and had no snow. At lunch in t-shirt and shorts!
All that rain was with freezing levels >11,000'. The only snow up there was on some north facing slopes really....
But, it is cooling off dramatically tonight and tomorrow and snow levels are dropping to 3000-4000' so what moisture we muster up Thursday-Friday will be snow up there.

Alan...wow that's great, it must've been gorgeous. I hope the snow holds out till later next week.
I recently read about an approach to the Enchants via Crystal Creek. Anyone have more detail about this route? Cairns, diff. routefinding, level of scramble, I see a glacier on the quad, where's the turnoff from Ingalls Ck trail? I'll probably still go one of the other more standard routes, but I'm curious about this as well.

Due to the fire in the Crystal Creek area recently, I'd stay away from that route. I've done it and it isn't bad but after the fire it'll be a mess so my recommendation is that you avoid it for awhile. You might consider a traverse, going in Aasgard and out Snow Creek. Regardless, have fun.

Here are a few pictures from Tamarack Canyon and the Shield Lake Valley from a couple weeks ago.
The guy in the pictures is not me. It's Jan, who I met at the trailhead parking lot. Turns out he is 79 years old! He has actively explored the Enchantments area for many, many, many, many years and probably knows more about it than anyone still hiking there (cha-ching!)
It was a great trip!
(Whoops, I posted a lot more pictures than I thought. I will post the ones of the Enchantment Lakes later.)

Bob K: Wow. Totally speechless.
Love the shot of Mesa in the morning. And Musky Lakelet didn't look anything near that pretty the last time I was there.
Egads, man. Looks like you didn't have any fun at all, did you? Never gonna go back there, I bet. Heck no.

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.

Thanks for the positive feedback, I really appreciate it. The pictures came out well, but they don't do complete justice to the magic of the area at that time. I regret not getting pictures of Tamarack Canyon itself, which was so beautiful, it was almost surreal.
The pictures were taken on the afternoon of Monday, October 6th and the morning of Tuesday, October 7th, this year. I will write up a trip report tonight.
