This short (2 mile) but steadily climbing trail was clear all the way. Some evedence of earlier snow was off to the side. We arrived at 10 am saturday and were the first ones in the lot. When we left three hours later, greater than ten vehicles were parked. Lots of dogs off leash, but they were all well mannered. The views to baker were great.

Thanks, Jim. Sounds like a great hike except it's so far away!

Sauk Mountain Road is on the west end of Rocport State Park about 8 miles east of Concrete. You head up the road 8 miles to the trail head.

It is a nice hike-especially after you cross the top and get to the other side. Very little trees too In season, it is right down the road from Rockport state park-with nice camping. Yeah, it is a VERY long drive, but well worth it (of course, when I lived up North, it was really close for me.) The privy at the start of the TH is the cutest-for a 6 ft man taking a leak, he gets an awesome view of Sauk River way down below! It is an A frame privy

I thought the same thing...anything over 50 miles one way is quite a marathon for a day hike. Then I realized that you only do the last 2 miles on foot. *slaps forehead* If I drive to the trailhead, it's actually a reasonable distance!
Really, this late in the year, getting up at normal hiking hours and driving north to the trailhead, you'll probably arrive there just as things are getting light enough to venture out. With snow and short days, it's becoming harder and harder to find any place that offer good views without having to break into snowline...

I was one of those pesky folks with the three dogs. I usually dot travel with three of them but we decided that the older dogs needed a short easy hike to. You should have stayed up there and watched the moon do its thing with a beautiful sunset to boot. Then put on our trusty headlamps stomped down and were sitting at home drinking a cold one by 9:00 pm

Catwoman, some of us forget that you live way down south in dixie. Rockport is only 1 1/2 to 2 hours away for us "northerners". I've had this hike on my list for a while, but I figured it would be either snowed in already, or washed away in the floods. I guess I figured wrong.
A car good for sleeping in is a must for me. That puts the drive up into the day before, with just the drive back for the day of the hike. I might do this one on Tuesday if the weather will cooperate just a little.

Check out Rasar State Park, on Hwy 20, right before Concrete. It is a nice place to carcamp at, and is open year round-it is on the skagit river and is a NICE place It is very peaceful.
