I paid my five dollars to hike this trail only becuase I was short on time and it was close to home. Trail was clear up to the second falls lookout but trail crews quit clearing here and the trail was blocked by a bushy cedar. Overall it was a good hike, it followed a river most of the way and I only passed one other hiker.

Has anyone been to Wallace falls since the snow storm? I'd like to take a friend with no snow equipment hiking.

I went to Wallace Falls about two weeks ago and there was a light frosting at the Upper Falls, most on the trees and very little on the trail. My friend went back last Thursday (Jan. 8th) and he said there was snow at the top, near Mid-Wallace Falls. He was slipping and sliding in his tennis shoes.

If you are looking for a good easy snow hike I recommend Either Heather or Lake 22. As long as you dont go around the lakes there is almost zero avalanche danger and this time of year there is guaranteed to be snow there

Since when have we had to pay to hike to Wallace Falls? I haven't been there in about three years.

It's only $15 for a yearly forest pass.

Really, I feel stupid I have been to Wallace Falls probably ten times this year and payed my five bucks each time. I was under the impression that even if you had all of the passes you still had to pay there.

I don't know about wallace falls specifically, I just figured since you said it was $5, it must have been a FP site. I don't know - I'm a SW WA hiker! Anyway, on sites with the forest pass, you can either pay $5 at the trailhead, or buy a pass for $15 that lasts a year. If you have a national parks pass, you can add on the forest pass to it for $15 and only carry one thing (you leave your NP pass on the dashboard)

Forest Passes will assuredly not work at state parks. The state park pass does have an annual fee for frequent users. If you visit them often the annual pass will be cheaper. This is taken from the State Parks website:
Quote:
The commission set the daily permit fee at $7 daily and $70 for an annual permit. This permit is discounted to $5 daily and $50 annually until 2006.
Gosh, we don't have to pay the $7.00 daily fee until 2006!! Whee!!! Full Info here: WA State Parks

Wow. Just, wow. I guess we're somewhat lucky down here in the Gorge because all we need is a forest pass for the majority of the trailheads. I guess if you're a frequent visitor, whip out your cashola!

The thing about state parks to watch out for, is that if you buy the yearly pass from them, do it now, not in June. Why? Because they are active from January 1st to December 31st-unlike the NF and NP passes that last one whole year from purchase rant.gif mad.gif So for the most part I just hike in NF's and NP's since I get a true year's worth out of my passes.

crwdog, Where are you finding Northwest Forest Passes for $15.00. They cost $30.00 everywhere I've seen, including the Forest Service. Buy NW Forest Pass A Golden Eagle pass is $65.00. That's $15.00 more than a National Parks pass and does also work as a Forest Pass.
