So, what is everyone's favorite trail snack? Do you make it yourself, or do you buy it prepackaged?

wasabi peas, salted cashews, dried mangos, dried pineappes, dried papayas, soy nuts, and M&Ms. I buy everything separately and combine them myself.

Anything that's not good for you, and especially anything processed from near a cow's spinal cord or brain. up.gif

American mangoes are grown by illegal aliens smuggled in from Manilla, so there is no difference! lol.gif Actually, they are just the best, and as a die-hard capitalist, I must reward the best product with my money. lol.gif wink.gif tongue.gif

The best is cold pizza! Yumyum! Then I'd say whatever candy bar is 6 for $2 at the grocery store, some vanilla squeeze pudding, PB queeze tubes smeared on Cliff bars (it's like icing! Makes them bricks o' fiber slide down biggrin.gif ) I like jerkey too. Backpacking? I usually carry a ziploc baggie of PB MM's in the front of my camera holder. I also like the cereal and milk bars-they don't go so well with winter-they get rock hard, even in my pocket. I used to make stuff for the trail...but it never makes it out of my kitchen! Sheesh! If it's sealed in indivdual bags it doesn't get touched! Having said that, I have a 1 1/2 lb block of homemade fudge for Hoosierdaddy tommorow biggrin.gif

I've never been a sweets fan, and I tend to bring along a bag of salted mixed nuts, or cashews. Sourballs (lemon drops) are good, too. I have to admit a huge fondness for beef, deer & elk jerky when I'm hiking. I do make some things on my own, such as the jerky, and dehydrated fruit.

Chicken livers
I know this will sicken some of you but one of my favorite snacks (or even lunch) are cold, sauteed chicken livers. The other thing I like is smoked oysters. As a rule I don't eat lunch in the winter -- I don't like to eat when it's cold and I just take along a lot of those GU packets. Karen

I tried some dried clams once sampled me by a couple members of the Skagit tribe I bumped into on the trail. I wish these were available in stores as they were very tasty and chewy.

Dried clams and chicken livers? You have to be kidding! Maybe if my plane crashed in the Andes and no other survivor looked palatable. hurl.gif

I dehydrate my own fruit. The national brand stuff doesn't even taste like fruit. Some other stuff that is categorized as dried fruit but really isn't - some brand of stuff (I can't remember, it starts with an "M"); sickly-sweet and trashy pineapple flavored mango. Strange but true. It's tangy and chewy. I also like grilled chicken strips or pork chops or smoked salmon (this stuff does keep for days). Guyere or Irish cheddar cheese. Also Halvah and sesame cookies (if it's not cold outside).

Dehydrated apples and bananas. Assort Clif type bars and trail mix. Paydays.

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.
