Sure we do! We even have hunting seasons via permit draws for them too. Not in the Pasayten, but over by Spokane there are seasons. If I remember correctly, if you get drawn it is once in a lifetime. Was my first moose sighting, though I have seen their tracks many times. My Dad had a young bull walk through his field last summer. And the neighbors had to chase a cow and calf out of their orchard around the same time.

Can you tell me a little more about their habitat? So there are some in the Pasayten; are they only found in this eastern part of the North Cascades? And does their habitat extend further east, to the north central part of the state, all the way to the Spokane area?

Hey Soop, I want to hear more about that 10D. HOw do you like it? How well does it operate? What about cropping? What kind of lenses do you use? TB

I agree, but would add approx. this much more area I covered in red. I have friends that tooks pics of a bull as it walked across hwy 97, swam the Columbia, and went through their orchard, and last they saw it was truck'n towards Waterville. They have been seen numerous times the length of the Methow Valley too. I know somebody in Brewster that hit one just outside of town. Score: Moose- 0, truck -0

How long did the moose hang around? I have seen a moose with a calf once- while camping in Gallatin NF north of Yellowstone- she immediately turned directly towards us and squared off; it was pretty obvious it was time to head the other direction! Frank
She looked at us for about a minute or two, and then decided to walk around us and keep walking down the creek. She didn't seem too worried!

BPJ, I love the camera. It has quite the learning curve compared to what I had been using previously, but I wanted more. I will still keep and use my fuji s602, but mainly for the video mode. It operates very intuitively for me. Everything seems to be where it is comfortable for me. It is my first SLR, so I have nothing to compare to. Being a 6mp, you can crop quite a bit if you like. The images print unbelievably smooth. I use my epson 1280 to print 13x19's all the time and I was shocked the first one I printed. I have found heaven. LOL Right now I am using a 24-85 f3.5 canon (so-so images) and a 70-200 f4L canon ( stunning! so glad I bought this one) and I will be adding more as my pocketbook allows. Looking at prolly the 17-40 next. High on my wish list is their new 28-300 F3.5ISL. It isn't out yet, but it looks like something I want. It won't be for everybody, but even at like 3.5 pounds or so I think it will be the cat's meow for me. I don't mind weight as my daypack usually weighs north of 30lbs. I can go on and on, but dpreview or luminous-landscape can give ya more than I ever could about the camera. One thing seriously to consider tho: Using a camera like this requires a bit more work with software with the images. It does comparatively little "processing" (defaults) that the regular p/s's do, so a person has to learn photoshop, etc. OR! You could cheat like me and get a custom action made for your camera from somebody that knows what they are doing! biggrin.gif Like this guy... http://fphoto.org/10D-sharpening/ Sorry for the long post, but I think you get my drift. I am 100% satisfied with this camera. Disclaimer!! Being new to this photography thing, the rant above is only my unexperienced, uneducated opinion about this camera! I am happy with this machine but I know they aren't for everbody. Please check out some of the available resources and don't take my word for it. Fish on! up.gif

I went to blklk last year in late May and hit deep snow at the other end of the lake so didn't have a chance to explore. Plus, the thought of more blowdown to scramble over after 5 miles of blowdown after blowdown after blowdown on the trail wasn't very appealing. We poked around the burn area too, and visited the firefighter memorial as well. Chewuch Falls is only 3 miles in from the road end, and I'd love to see them in their new state of surrounding, but man, what a jackstraw of black trees to wade through. it'd be like walking over a billion pick-up sticks. Well and getting across the river might pose a challenge. Is there a type of forest service law or something against hikers going in there now? I know there was at first, but I don't know what the punishment was, or is - an escort out and a fine, I guess...?

Hey Soop, I was thinking the new 16-35 lens. I like the F2.8 L jobs. They are just big bucks. That 24-70 F2.8L is a nice jobber that's for sure. Well, Im not the Photoshop guy yet so I dont know about that. Looks like a nice set up that's for sure. I found that camera here for a good price. http://www.digitalliquidators.com/subcategory.asp?scatid=21 TB

BPJ, yeah the 16-35 would also be the cats meow. I just can't justify the price difference. I just don't need f2.8 for my outdoor stuff. There are many side by side reviews with the 17-40 neck and neck. I am not a good enough photographer to think I could tell the difference. This guy is pretty well respected. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/canon-17-40.shtml I like his comment at the end of his review. And I quote " The new 17-40mm f/4L is a welcome surprise though. At nearly half the price of the faster and slightly wider 16-35mm f/2.8L it provides excellent image quality, surpassing that of the more expensive lens in several areas." I am sure it would do me fine. Oh, and about digitalliquidators.. they are notorious. I challenge you to get them to ship you a 10D for 1199. I bet you one , no two secret lakes hockeygrin.gif if you called them and said thats all you wanted it would never ship. Take a look here and read the posts. http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2375.html

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell then Soop, you are the lenses meow arent you? Good that I fell over the stump and found your digital joe-bob knowledge base isnt it. Hard to decide which camera to get. I guess that ultimately I should be getting a medium format FILM camera, but I like digits. TB

Sorry folks, my bad. Evidently the trail I had referred to is/was closed. The following trails have known impacts from last summer's Needle Creek and Farewell Fires, and will remain closed until the damage can be repaired: Andrews Trail #504, Lake Creek Trail #500, Crystal Lake Trail #100, Fire Creek Trail #561, Peepsight Trail #525, and Coleman Ridge Trail #505, Driveway Butte Trail #481, West Fork Methow Trail #480, and Trout Creek Trail #479. The trails are dangerous for hikers and horseback riders. They have holes in the tread, thin crusts of tread over burned-out roots under the trails, hazardous trees hanging over the trails, destroyed turnpikes, downed logs, and burned bridges. The district has requested funding for the work, but is still waiting to hear if money is available. It is likely that all these trails will remained closed through 2004, since the repairs will take time to complete once the money is allocated. People are urged to call the district for up-to-date information about repair schedules. Forest Service website here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/recreate/reports.html#methow and tonasket My apologies!!!!
