Moose&Squirrel and I met up for this snow-line prober of the Bald Mountain trail. We had a great hike, got in about 3.5 miles and to a high point with a view of Three Fingers. There are a few blowdowns and snow patches but nothing most people here couldn't handle. Here's a couple of photos. I'm sure Moose&Squirrel will post more soon. Flat tire on the way out. mad.gif Karen

Yep, I need a jack. Or a Dave or a John or ..... (just kidding). This hike gets a bad reputation in some of the hiking books ... surprising given how pretty the forest is. Hopefully I/we will return when the rest of the snow is gone to complete the trip (I have two new tires). Karen

What is the bad reputation it gets Karen? Muddy and/or slippery boardwalks, etc? Certainly can't be the beautiful forest with some of the coolest old gnarled trees I've seen- ancient grandfatherly stalwarts of the woods. Can you or somebody else please identify the flower in my previous post? Thanks.

Flower
I believe it is Alpine Laurel. I'm about 97 percent sure. If I'm wrong, I sure someone will enlighten me (at least, I hope so). Karen

Answer to the first question
MooseandSquirrel, Your first question .... "Don't Go Hiking in the North Cascades" gives it a poor rating (don't do) because of the lack of views and a boring trudge through mostly forest. Words to that effect. Must be something either terribly wrong with the two of us or terribly right, eh? I thought it was a gorgeous trail. Karen

I believe nuseries call the domesticated variety Mountain Laurel. There are a couple outside a building where I work. Makes a Rhodie look like a weed, IMO. Just the premise of that book "Don't Go Hiking (waiste your time?) in the North Cascades" irrates me. mad.gif

I have sat in that very same place comtemplating the world...view of Three Fingers from Bald mtn. where your photo was taken, have one with fall colors. Bald offers some great views, much tho as you probably noted is obscured because of the forest at ridge line. But what pleasure it has been for me to crash the brush in and around Bald for exploration and other intimate views, mostly connected to belonging to the Trail Blazers Club... http://www.alpinequest.com/across.htm Enjoyed your report.
