Josef Scaylea passed away yesterday at the age of 91. If you grew up in this area and are of a certain age you'll remember him. In my humble opinion, he was one of the greats. He inspired an interest in photography in me when I was a kid, and after making my first coffee-can, "pin hole" camera, I really went nuts on black & white photography for a few years. Seeing his name I immediately thought of the Blue Angels photo and many more beautiful b&w images he took for the Seattle Times over the years. He was a genuine artist and local icon.
I'm sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed his photos in the Seattle Times. My former boss helped him to set up a web site for selling his photos. You can see his work on the site.
Oh man, god bless him. I believe it was last year when he was on Evening Magazine and I had first learned of him. Great person with an intense passion behind the camera.
