We drove our car easily to just beneath the Blackhawk Mine. Going NW through a logged area we connected with the saddle between Phelps and McClain at 4,200'. Then we stayed on the ridge going right, NE, until reaching 5,100' . Then we approached the summit from the SE. The register showed our ascent to be the first this year.

There is brush but it is only huckleberry bushes. A fair amount of old dead logs. Off trail usually involves some degree of brush and it didn't seem that bad to me. It gets a LOT worse than this. On the downclimb the "trail" is easier to find and follow.
