Anybody have any recent experience with Alaska Lake? Trail conditions? Is it easier to access it from the PCT, rather than the Cold Creek trail?

Definitely easier to access Alaska Lake from Gold Creek, but still a good workout. Not sure about snow conditions.

The only way I would consider going up the Gold Creek route is in October when you can boulder hop right up the Gold Creek creekbed. Stick with the PCT or you will be swallowed up by brush.

Mike, are you sure you're talking about Alaska and not Joe Lake? When I did my hike in late October up Gold Creek there was little if any brush on the valley portion of the trail up to the Alaska/Joe junction. I remember fighting some slide alder (covered by about 2' of snow) on portions of the last steep mile up to Alaska Lake but I just assumed I was off the trail. When I found the trail again there was little if any brush. I didn't think it was that bad relatively speaking.

Doh! Here is at least part of the trail description. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/getaways/78890_hike18.shtml I went to Alaska Lake maybe 5 years ago. The trail didn't seem to bad. On the other hand the trail to Joe Lake which had been my original destination had alot of blowdowns across it.

Your information is more current than my experience up the Gold Creek trail. I would love to see the improvements but it is unlikely I will visit that area any time soon. Mainly I peakbag and all of those summits have been tagged already.

As a point of interest: A new resort type area is presently being developed right up to the trailhead, called 'Ski Tur Valley' with street names already in place. Another Alpenthal? One can only guess how that might effect future access to the Gold Creek trail.

Thanks for the help everyone. Maybe I'll wait and explore it as a dayhike first.

oh yes, it is skeeter central! later on it's not so bad, after the fly infestation which follows when the skeeters taper off some.
