Beckey's CAG cites Silver EaglePeak at elevation 6241' and points out an error on the Big Snow Mtn Quad that says "BaldEagle is incorrectly marked at its location". Having climbed both I wrote them up for wta.org based upon Beckey's understanding. I may disagree with some of his route information but he always at a minimum gotten me on the right mountain. Jeff Howbert's popular Homecourt List matches the current USGS designation. This inconsistency has bugged me over the years. While atop what the USGS map indicates to be BaldEagle I wondered just why it was that absolutely none of the snow that melts on BaldEaglePeak drains into BaldEagle Lake. So today I went to review the maps extant for that area at the Allen Library of UW. Beckey is right. The USFS map of Snoqualmie National Forest from 1917 shows the highpoint directly to the east of Lake Malachite to be Silver EaglePeak. BaldEaglePeak is not depicted and BaldEagle Lake is absent. Maps at this time did not show topographical lines. Silver EaglePeak is shown by hachures which are just short lines radiating out from a central point. This won't change a thing as once a map gives a name it becomes fact. But if anyone was wondering about the discrepancy therein lies the answer.
