wallabypeak (pt 7995) 6-8-07
wallaby is the next door neighboor to kangaroo temple and the fin on kangaroo ridge near washington pass. for a very experienced scrambler/climber, this is a nice, quick, easy going, pressure free trip to a beautiful area. the views are excellent. i assume many combine this outing with other peaks. one of my friends combined it with Copper/Rainy/Frisco another suggested doing it with either whistler or porcupine. i bet it would be fun to combine it with its neighbor kangaroo temple. we just did the short 6mi, 2800' gain trip to wallaby alone.
we parked at the hairpin turn on highway 20 just east and below washington pass, room for a couple of vehicles. the snow started at the highway. we headed up the valley
above and on the right side of the creek toward kangaroo pass(6671) which is the low spot in the valley headwall - pretty easy snow travel. just before reaching the pass we followed the boot track in the snow that did a little rising rightward traverse. in a blink, we were at the pass. from the pass we headed up wallaby's easy (class 2, with 1 class 3 move - the skier in our party did the whole trip in ski boots.) sw ridge staying on top or a little to the sides

looking at the traverse
we traversed a moderately steep, but easy snow field until we could turn the corner to reach the class 2 sandy gully that lead to the top.

the summit registry placed in the mid 90's, had few entries, but showed some familiar names. we were the 2nd party this year. most years only a few parties summited. 2005 had 10 parties, go figure.
equipment: ice axes, the skier wore a helmet(the rest of us should have worn one), packed crampons but did not use
