Bingo! This is a great thread. I had no idea of the variety of fungus among us. Thanks much.

I found this in the rainforest the other day. It looked cool and was firm, well-attached for a mushroom. Any idea what it is?

looks like a Ganoderma sp., G. oregonense or G. tsugae... A relative of reishi/ling zhi (G. lucidum) and known for their medicinal properties, neat find...

Looks like a type of a conk, but I'm a fungus hack, so not sure. Not very helpful, I know....

Maybe Artist conk?

I'm a man, I can change, if I have to, I guess.

I have seen this one in late summer, early fall. These are from the North Fork of the Sauk:
Colorful mushrooms on the lower part of the North Fork of the Sauk River trail (about 4 miles in).

I was hiking the Staircase area a couple days ago and came across this fungus. I have no idea what it is. I only saw it in one area which was where the Beaver Burn area is. And I only saw it on broken off branches (birch I think). It was not on anything living. Sorry for the not so clear photo, but it looked like and had the consistance of cotton. It looked like snow when I first saw it but discovered it definitly was not.

Wow, that is really ice and not a fungus! I had even scraped some of it off with another branch and it didn't seem to break like you would think ice would. Instead it attached to the stick I used. After reading the link and such, it was definitely in an area where the ground was still frozen. Truely am odd phenomenom. Glad I got to see it. Thx More Cowbell up.gif

I fell for the hair ice on Sunday, too. Coolest fungus I ever saw.
