Sarbar's post got me wondering what people include in their gorp.

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.

I just sorta head down the bulk aisle at Cost Cutters, or Haggen's, or Trader Joes (when I can get there) and toss interesting looking stuff into the cart. When I get home, I combine it all and put it into baggies for trail munching. Sometimes the combo is better than others...

Two kinds of GORP for me
I make a salty and a desert GORP. Salty GORP- honey roasted peanuts, pecans, walnuts, Pepridge Farm pumpernickel sticks, garlic bread flavored pretzel nuggets. Desert GORP- cinnamon teddy grahams, chocolate teddy grahams, honey teddy grahams, jumbo dark chocolate ships, jumbo white chocolate chips, pecans, walnuts (this melts sometimes...but I normally have it after dinner when it has hardened again).

Costco's Kirkland Signature Trail Mix up.gif Almonds, cashews, peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms. The almonds and cashews cancel out the adverse affect of the faux chocolate M&Ms.

I also get the Kirkland brand at Costco. The last couple of hikes I have tried adding some craisons. It is good for snacks at home also.

I voted in the never again category. I bring unsalted raw almonds. Sometimes I also bring some unsalted raw cashews. M&Ms are made out of high fructose corn syrup (cheaper, and makes you hungrier sooner, than real sugar) and hydrogenated oil (cheaper, and requires use of medicinal drugs sooner, than real oil), and some brown food coloring. If you want to bring some chocolate I suggest cocoa nibs (100% real) and they won't melt. For an energy supply while doing a long fast uphill I use fruit, but I'm thinking of switching to diluted orange juice in a couple of medium size pop bottles.

I hit the bulk aisle for
  1. Thompson Raisins
  2. salted peanuts(plain, or BBQ, or Cajun, or sometimes all 3)
  3. salted cashews
  4. M+Ms

it should be right around that next bend........I think.....

I attempted a thread about GORP about a year ago. See for yourself how no one gave a rat's ass about it. Either that, or no one likes me so the thread was a bomb. I can't stand to see someone's feelings hurt by a no-response thread, so I'll go ahead and contribute a response, similar to the one that started the failed thread. Fred Meyer has a sesame nut mix that I toss in with chocolate chips and raisins. So there's your damn response. You happy? huh.gif

I must admit I had a Gary Shandling moment of doubt that no one but me would vote in the gorp poll. 19 votes is pretty darn good endorsement for mere raisins and peanuts, although there are 16 more ABBA fans than gorp fans.... uhh.gif I'm not complaining, though. ABBA is ABBA and gorp is gorp. Two completely different kinds of nutrition. up.gif up.gif As for me, it's usually good ol' raisins and peanuts, but I had a friend that made it with coconut, chocolate chips and maybe something else I can't remember and it was pretty tasty.

Gorp is one of those ubiquitous type things that almost everyone carries and no-one talks about........because just about everyone carries it. At the store, we've started carrying one with raw pumpkin and sesame seeds, raw nuts, raisins, and just enough salted, roasted almonds to keep you munching. It's pretty good. I pick out the raisins and replace them with pineapples, but that's just me.
