solomon mt (aka fish eagle)(aka pt 7095) 7-7-07
what to do on the 7th day during the seventh month during the seventh year?
we started at the scatter creek trailhead and headed up the easy to follow trail to the signed junction and turned left on the scatter creek trail. the trail has a few creek crossings then follows the creek up to the head of the valley and on to what some people call fish eagle pass. (for details on the route to the pass see: https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=272969) from the pass, we just headed left, nne up the easy ridge. sometimes on the ridge, but mostly left(west) of the ridge. the route to the summit was easy, nothing harder than class 2, dirt, rock and talus. the summit register, left by the amazing johnny jeans had few names in since he placed it a few years(2001 if i remember right) ago. one of the few people signed in register, climbing ranger john morrow(a really nice guy), said that although the summit register names the summit as fish eagle peak, he believes pt 7031 is really fish eagle and this summit pt 7095 is solomon mt. who am i to question the wisdom of solomon :>) the views from the summit were much better than i anticipated. it was a four volcano day - adams, rainier, glacier peak and baker. we spent tons of time up there identifying peaks.
on top i apologized to everyone. i made everyone bring ice axes(never used), helmets (would not bring if a small experienced part) and recommended sandals(never used) for the supposedly more difficult(nothing dangerous, just the possibility of getting feet wet) creek crossings. i was zero for three in recommendations :>) on the way up, i thought, near the head of the valley, heading straight up the open slopes to a spot on the ridge north of fish eagle pass. on the way down, we tried it and it worked quite well.
this was a easy going, off the beaten path, very non-technical, trip with straightforward routefinding to a seldom visited peak with excellent views. a day to go have fun, but not tire myself out(i had a rainier trip coming up soon).
thanks to big d who kept track:
