As others I'm not a vegetarian but love Mary Janes. Also Back Packers Pantry are pretty good also.

Forest, it doesn't matter how much fat you eat. If you don't bring a headnet, YOURE GONNA DIE!!!

Phew, thanks for all the info folks! Because of travel stuff, I'm limited to REI and have to do all my shopping in one hit at the store, so can't do mail order etc. It seems that 2-serving packs would be too much (I've a healthy appetite but not huge). Backpackers Pantry at REI is 2-portion packs only. That leaves the Mountain House single-serving Pro Packs (generous single portion) and the Mary Jane 1.5-portion packs. I'll plan on having a mix of these brands: variety is the spice of life after all! Thanks again.

I'm a huge fan of Mary Jane's Farm stuff, too. The outrageous outback oatmeal is amazing, and my favorite meal is the ChiliMac. It's all organic, and locally/regionally produced in Moscow, Idaho. If you happen to be traveling through Moscow, you can get much of her stuff in bulk at the Moscow Food Coop. But, when backpacking, the individual packets are nice (no dishes!!). Lots of the other freeze dried stuff makes me feel icky after a few days.

When eating freeze dried food, always, always add a shot of olive oil! It will give you the fat you need, and keep the food from sitting in your stomach wink.gif

Big thumbs up for Mountain House. I've been underwhelmed by the flavor of the Backpacker's Pantry meals I've tried. They're overpriced IMHO. Never tried Mary Jane's.

I had the MJ's Black Bean hummus this past week. It was pretty good on tortillas. Nice and spicy. Left black beans all over my teeth..which I didn't know. Made me extra pretty on day 4 lol.gif

Thumbs up for Mountain House
Mountain House is by far the best freeze dried food I've tasted - My partner on my last trip sure did agree. I recommend all their pasta dishes while I am not a big fan of their mashed potatos dishes.

- enjoy life -

Dude and I also vote for Mountain House. Mary Jane's can really, really lack in flavor in our opinion, even with adding in meat or seasonings. I remember one trip where we were so hungry and the particular meal we had was so bland we had trouble even eating it. We ended up adding offerings from others to try and make it more edible, but alas, it never improved. shakehead.gif

I generally prefer the Mountain House dishes. There are 3 or 4 of the Mary Jane's dishes I really like (Couscous and Lentil Curry being my favorite), but there are several others that were too bland even for me. I keep saying I'll prepare my own meals sometime, but other things get in the way. At least that's my excuse.
