Wanting a brown hike for at least part of the way, we chose a hike we had never done before, Icicle Ridge trail #1570. The first 2 miles gain 1600 ft, where there is a campsite (2800ft). The well graded trail is beautifully maintained. We hit random snow patches at 3800ft. At 4,050ft. the snow shoes came on. This was on the switchbacks on the east facing slope, where the snow was very soft and slippery. Once on top of the ridge the snow was a little more consolidated. We stayed on the ridge crest until getting to a good view point at 5,500ft. The snow was good for descending, but soon there will be some seroius traps opening up. This was Luis' first trip on a dirt trail, and he impressed us by trotting the first 2.5 miles up and about 3 miles on the way down. He traveled in either a backpack or sling when we got to the snow. Elevation Gain: 4,300ft. Distance: approx. 10 miles RT

Gorgeous! The higher you get on that trail the better it gets. One of my favorite early-season hikes.

A couple of years ago my dog Ashley and I went up this trail in the early Spring. When we got home, I discovered she was full of ticks -- be sure to check Luis!

What a difference can one week make! We just visited Icicle Ridge yesterday (4/25), found snow at 4200 ft., and snowshoes went on at about 4400 ft. It was really nice to hike again and see all the spring flowers coming out at the lower section.

Good question! All we know is that there was less snow on Icicle Ridge than on Dirty Face two weeks later. The trail is probably snow free for 4 or more miles.

I was up there May 2nd and made it about 4.5 mi before running into any snow. I'm planning on 4th of July Cr this Saturday because I read somewhere this trail is mostly on a south facing slope and melts out earlier than many other trails in the area and as a plus it's 4800' of elevation gain to the old lookout site!
