To give some perspective, here's a map of the project area. It crosses the Mountain Loop Highway just beyond Masonic Park & extends north to Canyon Creek and east about half a mile before the Robe Canyon Trailhead and the Green Mountain Road. The southern end is just above the Robe Canyon tunnels. If you bother to read any of the project information already posted, they will have graded tracks, grandstands, parking areas, etc. This is a rezone from forest land to recreation.

Does your mother live on the mountain loop highway? Designated tracks are going to keep riders off the hiking trails.

huh.gif You don't get up to the mountian loop area much do you? I have seen no evidence of motorcycle activity on the area trails in years. Unless it some trials bike rider ultimate zen master of throttle control who has mastered the art of not spinning the tire...those who are that good are few. All trail erosion in there area is due to rain fall, and the massive number of hikers.

Rok and Hulk, Remember this is a racetrack, not an ORV park with single track, mud bogs, and different trails for different vehicles. This is 7 days/wk., 10:00 am to sundown track practice and racing for dirtbikes, maybe quads, maybe snowmobiles, every day of the year. (That's what the permit is asking for.) From the mx forums I look at, track racers and ORV park users, like 4 wheelers at Reiter, have a different set of priorities. Tom

Comrades, Reload the calendars. The Hearing Examiner meeting in Everett for MXGP Motocross has been rescheduled for July 7,8, 9. The MDNS was appealed by several different people/agencies and the county planning people and applicant are looking at some tough arguments against the SEPA determination and project in general. Tom

All, Here's a big article on the proposed track from the Herald: http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20100525/NEWS01/705259854/0/LIVING05 The applicant loves to tell everyone how noisy the area is anyway with two gravel pits next door, but he doesn't tell anyone he will be permitted to operate until 10:00 at night and on weekends/holidays when the pits are closed. I am a motorcycle rider and I think that people should have a place to ride and race, but I do not think that this would be the right place. Too much impact upon residents and WAY to close to a popular hiking trail. It is hard to believe that there is no place near here where this would work.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

The optimal spot for this would have been Reiter. It's already been a ORV site for 60 years and wouldn't have upset the noise cart with the locals. You can bet the pressure will be on MLH now that Reiter is being neutered to death. There needs to be more space for ORV's, but the MLH area isn't the place. down.gif

Comrades, The hearing for early July is delayed again. Time to reset the calendars. Tom

Comrades, Actually, Snohomish County PDS pulled the whole darn Determination of Mitigated Nonsignificance and put it on hold. Lots of contention and brouhaha. Tom

Depends on which end of the muffler/expansion chamber you're on I reckon. Tom

Salooners, Once again it seems the MXGP motocross racetrack will get its meeting with the Snohomish County Hearing Examiner, probably late summer, but there are no firm dates as of Aug. 1. If anyone from WTA, Mountaineers, or Sierra Club is interested in a little, easy community service, stewardship, activism, I would appreciate a PM. Thanks, Tom Matlack Lake Stevens/Granite Falls

NW Hikers, It's back. Snohomish County PDS just issued the Mitigated Determination of Nonsignificance for the motocross track sited near the Old Robe RR Tunnel county park on Mountain Loop Highway. Straight up give away by the county. No enforcement of anything at all. Gonna make for some noisy hikes up Pilly. Any Mountaineers, etc. interested in a little stewardship can PM me. No hearing date yet. Tom M.
