In an effort to find some sun (or at least no rain) I headed out to Ancient Lakes area. This was my first visit and was hoping to make it into a loop hike. Took I-90 to the exit before George, drove past the amphitheatre until the road turned into 1st NW. Went left on road “U” and parked at the locked gate just before Evergreen Reservoir. From there I hiked along, more or less, the following directions.

Tried to do a little cross country jaunt but was soon frustrated by the Byzantine layout of the sheer canyon walls. Seems no two points are reached in a straight line around here! Not that it matters as there are boot paths everywhere. On my way down to Ancient Lakes from Dusty Lake I passed by a rattle snake. It was about six feet off the trail and I would have missed it altogether except for the rattle sound. Thought it was too cold for them to be active. Anyway, no harm done but I kept an eye out for them after that! Very nice place with a lot packed into a small area. What surprised me was how much green there is in the middle of an arid region. There were even some spots with cattails. Anything near one of the pothole lakes or streams had plenty of lush vegetation.

Next time I’ll go back when the wildflowers are in bloom…

Nice route and nice pics. Quincy WRA is always a favorite off season area.

Came face to face with a rattlesnake last time I was there, too, so I guess folks do need to be on the lookout.

Something lost behind the ranges. Lost and waiting for you....... Go and find it. Go!

Was there much water in the falls? Make sure you go back in the Spring (assuming we have Spring and it doesn't just skip to Winter again), as the greening of the grass is really nice.

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.

Judging by the marks on the cliff, the falls are probably at a low point right now.

That's a great hike. We normally come in from the rest stop W of Quincy, hike up and through Ancient Lakes to the upper 'ponds', then over to Dusty and back out the coulee to the car. Nice early or late season jaunt!
