This is a road sign I saw at South Pass on my way to the trailhead in Wyoming's Wind Rivers last summer.  Evidently there's a little confusion in the Wyoming State Highway Department.
The start of the Lander Cutoff road at South Pass. Evidently the WY Highway Dept. is a bit confused as to the duration of winter. I'm inclined to favor the white sign.

The Forest Service in the Winds evidently likes to discourage hikers, as witness these two signs.  After you've hiked half a mile from the first sign, the goal is farther away!

Trail length measuring is an inexact science. This kind of error happens all too often, unfortunately. Using the wheel method is about the only accurate way to measure distance, and even then it depends on who is doing it and if they make mistakes, or if the mileage meter is calibrated properly. Then there's the problem of trail reroutes, and if the trail is remeasured or not. Errors also happen with the people who make the trail signs. I used to volunteer with the Green Mtn. Club maintaining the Long Trail in Vt. Getting the single measuring wheel from the club HQ was impossible because it was always out when I needed it. I knew there were mistakes on some signs for the trail section I was maintaining, but could never get the signs fixed.

The little sign reads "Unsafe drinking water"  doh.gif

Seems like instead it should read "Unsafe water to drink", IMHO.  doh.gif

In Patagonia there is a sign warning folks about loose rocks.
This was my favorite sign (and there are plenty of great signs in Patagonia). My guess is that after translating the Spanish, someone (probably the sign maker) noticed the double meaning and engraved the Rolling Stones logo on it. Really cute.
