Chumstick Mountain
I had wanted to get up on Chumstick Mountain and try to catch some views for awhile . It had an old lookout on the top once upon a time, so with that history you know your going to have a great high, ridgeline vantage point with expansive views, weather dependent. A road goes up to the summit area, but we didn't now how far we would be able to make it up.
Steve and I met Tony at the Park and Pool at 1015 hr., a slacker start, but with lows in the 20's we figured we let it warm up a little . The skies were clear blue several hours earlier, but some clouds moved in with time and a cloud deck generally around 7-8k' with occasional breaks as we made our way up Derby Canyon Rd., Tony drove his Xterra , which negotiated some nasty sections of mud and ruts and we made it to the Entiat Summit Road that runs the ridge from near SR 97 to the Chiwawa River Rd.
We parked and walked to the summit of Chumstick 5810', it was quite cool and windy at times, the views had become limited, but we still had some good ones, this would be a great spot under blue skies, and will be a great start for a spring ridge run to the Columbia River .
Rock formations along the slope of a ridge highpoint. McClellan Peak, Temple Ridge, Prussik Peak, Enchantment Peak, Druid Plateau, and Cannon Peak. Cloud shrouded Mt. Cashmere. Waterville and Waterville Plateau Blag Mountain Iron Mountain and Miller Peak. Tree Big Lou and Big Jim Highpoint along ridgeline.
We meandered around the nearby ridge and highpoints, ate a lunch on a downed old growth log, in a sheltered and sunny spot, then made our way back. Definitely a gem if you like expansive views.
Chumstick Mountain034_edited 5700' plus highpoint just East of Chumstick Mtn. Steve and Get Out and Go on ridgeline highpoint. Cannon Mtn. , Druid Plateau, with section of Mt. Stuart partially visible. Chumstick Pano 2

Chumstick is an old favorite with my crowd, great 360 degree views and a neat small summit. Nice shots, looks like you had a great outing.

Nice to be out yesterday before winter came crashing in today. Gliders, ridge runners, hunters, mt bikers and motorbikers or just a picnic spot with a view.... I'm thinking some sweet turns on the open slopes in winter Chumstick Mt. certainly does offer a lot of recreation opportunities. We may have to connect some of those high points in spring.

Nice job guys. Chumstick is a cool mountain. My wife and I drove up there and spent the night catching a meteor shower this last summer. Great place to watch the sky fall and the sun rise.

Like they say, if you want to enjoy some of the best views go to the site of a past or present lookout, you won't be disappointed. The 360 views are so easily had, you feel like you cheated to get them. A great trip for the entire family if you can get up there.

I thought Derby Canyon was closed? Someone told me that had it gated off for logging?
