You know you're old and crusty and senile when you pine for the days of the fruitcake bashing. Tom

I live in a house now and I require more fruitcakes than in the past when I lived in an apartment and needed one for a front doorstop and one to prop open a window. I now have 2 doors and 2 windows that require propping. And I have inherited a concrete lawn cherub that could use a platform. So I have capacity for 5 fruitcakes, but am open to accepting more. Let me know whatcha got. up.gif

Sorry Kim, Wolfermans is sold out of their Classic and Original fruitcakes. Seems sorta early. Maybe the poll caused a rush on the gnarly stuff. rant.gif rant.gif rant.gif Tom

2013 Bump. SCOTTISH FRUITCAKE RECIPE You`ll need the following: 1 cup of water 1 cup of sugar 4 large brown eggs 2 cups of dried fruit 1 teaspoon of salt 1 cup of brown sugar Lemon juice 1 cup of nuts 1 bottle of whisky. Sample the whisky to check for quality. Take a large bowl. Check the whisky again. To be sure it`s the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and beat again. Make sure the whisky is still okay. Cry another tup. Turn off the mixer. Beat two leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Mix on the tuner. If the fired druit gets stuck in the beaterers, pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the whisky to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who cares? Check the whisky. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Spoon. Of sugar or something. Whatever you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don`t forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out of the window. Check the whisky again and go to bed. Who the hell likes fruitcake anyway??

While growing up in the South, we were forced to endure the sticky sweet Claxton Fruitcake. They claim to be "world famous" but I think they are more likely regionally famous. https://claxtonfruitcake.com/ As an adult I've discovered the Italian version, Panettone, and much prefer it.

Amazon sells this stuff, so I purchased some a few weeks age. Would rate it on the low end of "OK", but no matter what I think of it, I had to give it away. It hammered my blood sugar numbers (due to diabetes). There has to be better out there...

We read Truman Capote's cute little story "A Christmas Memory" featuring 31 fruitcakes and bootleg whiskey. I brought in a couple of samplings from a local big box store and with the obligatory whip cream, many teens liked it more than I thought. Tom

I stayed at a friend's house in Bellingham just before Christmas one year to ski at Mt. Baker. Two very well dressed chaps knocked on the door and came with…..fruitcake. My friend Dave opened the door, "Oh, and you've got fruitcake. I'll tell you something about fruitcake;" Dave said. "they made about 200 of them back around the time of Christ, and they have been passing them around ever since." No other words were spoken. lol.gif

My mother used to make fruitcake (having learned from my father's mother I am sure). The family all ate it. I'd certainly never buy it when you can make your own. The fresher the better.
