I was just reading about this today. Verizon is, by default, using a kind of "super" tracking cookie (technically, it's not really a cookie in the usual sense, but a kind of tracking tag inserted into web addresses you use on your phone). The information will then be shared with Verizon's newly purchased AOL, and merged with any information AOL may already have on you, to send targeted advertising to you based on web sites you visit. This may sound like nothing new, but apparently it is new in the sense that you can't easily get around it, even using private web viewing.
From http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2492705,00.asp
"The Relevant Mobile Advertising program uses your postal and email addresses, certain information about your Verizon products and services (such as device type), and information we obtain from other companies (such as gender, age range, and interests)," Verizon said. "The separate Verizon Selects program uses this same information plus additional information about your use of Verizon services including mobile Web browsing, app and feature usage and location of your device."
Earlier reports said that you could opt out via your phone's Verizon privacy settings, but when I went to the setting indicated on my phone (I have a Sumsung Galaxy 4) I could not find it, which makes me think the page has been modified. You CAN opt out by calling 866-211-0874.
Lots more information can be obtained by googling Verizon super cookies.
