Sat Apr 26, 2008 6:35 pm Icicle and Lake Wenatchee recon/snow conditions
I was dying to check out the snow status up the Icicle from Leavenworth, so Wildernessed and I went for a little drive.
The road is clear of snow to the Johnny creek campground. The snow was melting out fast with the latest warm spell. I'm guessing you could drive a great distance farther in the next two weeks.
I was hoping to drive up road 7601 to the eightmile TH but it was still gated at Bridge Creek campground. The road looked dry as far as I could see past the gate so hopefully they will open it soon.
Does anyone know if the forest service posts when it opens the roads up? I looked all over Wenatchee national forest web page but could not find a list of closed roads.
From Icicle road we stopped at a few viewpoints to try and figure what points were along the ridges and what drainages we were looking up. I looked up the victoria creek drainage and would like to get back to Lake Victoria this year for an over-nighter. I hope to try and scout out a route from victoria around to Ruth and Cara lakes. Sounds like an interesting through hike out to the trail short of Windy pass and down past Trout lake.
After Icicle, we drove to Lake Wenatchee. I was hoping we could make it to the glacier view CG and take a short jaunt up to Hidden Lake to stretch the legs after all the driving. Snow build up on the road stopped us .25-5 mi. from the cg.
It appears the snow line has receded up dirty face lookout about halfway up the mountain. Wenatchee River Road is still closed off at the snowpark parking. The campgrounds around the lake were snow free without the near onslaught of bugs.
Wildernessed will post pictures of the Recon.
Also, if anyone is interested, I hiked beehive Mtn. yesterday night. the reservoir is still frozen over with a few in's of snow on the road. I wouldn't expect beehive road to open for a couple weeks.

Nice work, guys!
I woke up today at 1:30pm. Felt good to sleep in, but I was kicking myself for wasting such a gorgeous day...
Summer's coming!

Thanks for the recon and pics. Did you happen to drive up past Fish Lake and check out the Chiwawa Road? I went by there on tuesday and thought about running in and checking to see if I could reach the Fish Lake camping, but figured it was still snowed under.
Hopefully the warmer weather will start to open areas up. It's running about 3-4 weeks late.

Thanks, when I went by Coles Corner on tuesday there were still deep snow patches in the shaded areas, so I would guess the N. road is still under 2-4 ft. of snow, but you never know. There may have been enough people trying to launch boats over the opening weekend that they beat the road clear.
The past 3 years I've been the first one in there camping about the first week of April. This year I didn't think it would open until mid May. I'll have to take a run in there on my way back home in a few days.
