dirtyface middle summit(6223) 6-1-08 - just like skiing trip
what a great backcountry ski trip without skis. snow conditions were spectacular - firm base with a little bit of soft on top. two of our party were equipped with special custom back-country-alpine-touring-glissade-boots. they were doing some "tubular" shredding of the snow slopes.
we hiked the dirtyface trail up to its ne shoulder at 5500' and followed the ridge up to the old lookout site. we dropped back down to
the 5500' spot where the trail hits the ridge and started a westerly descending traverse on moderate terrain heading
to a 5600' foot saddle east of pt5949. then we descended (nw) down to 5100' and continued nw traversing the side of the ridge and continued mostly nw until we reached the summit.
awesome boot glissades just above the 5100' level. so good, it was repeated a few times!
proper ice axe technique demonstration
~10mi 5800' gain
equipment : ice axes, back-country-alpine-touring-glissade-boots :>)
.....leaving me wanting to return over and over in what ever capacity that may be, even if one day my knees are too old and I can only see the mountains from my porch.
