Desolation and heat, what a combo.

Yes, once again I fail in my treasure hunting merit badge. Desolation peak is still on my list but will have to wait until we've got a bit more green for the boat ride. Anyone heading up there, feel free to complete the hunt!

I guess 14 miles, 4500', and $200 is a bit steep for one Payday bar...

Okay, I give. Where was the Pay Day? I looked high and low. My guess is this guy got it:

Nope, I didn't see any sign that anyone is up there yet when I was there on July 4th. The shutters on the lookout are open, though. The lake is full and there are only a few small patches of snow on the trail. Lots of flowers on the upper meadows.

I think you're right, Martin! This guy looks a little "fuller bodied!" Did you look on top of the small propane tank under the Lookout?? It appears your friend knew right where to look! up.gif winksmile.gif s.d.

Well I'm glad someone found it! It seems we're leaving a hide and seek game for the wildlife - I believe a pika got the Starburst on Townsend last year. lol.gif

Yup, I looked on, under, and around the little propane tank. No sign even of a chewed-up wrapper. That marmot was a cheeky little bastard. Turn your back on him for just a moment and he'd start chewing on your pack. He took a liking to the salty sweat-soaked straps on my trekking poles and when I tried to shoo him away he just took off like a shot with them. If the poles hadn't tangled on a rock he'd have vanished with them into the crawl space under the lookout. Dang, he was fast. BTW, getting to Desolation by kayak is a fun alternative to taking the water taxi or doing the long hike in via the east bank trail. Ross Lake has some great waterfalls and cool little canyons that can be reached with a kayak. I could post some pictures but instead I'll just refer to seawallrunner's TR from a couple of years back. She takes way better pictures than me anyway.

martin, thank you. that was one of the most astounding trips that I have taken in the north west. six days in a canoe, camping all round Ross Lake, climbing desolation on a hot sunny day... what a fantastic adventure! I long to do this again some day. Tour de Ross (by canoe or kayak) is highly recommended.

I am shamelessly posting a reply to this thread just to see the new avatar that Opus has created for me.
