Looks like all of the NWHiker Smalls are ready to rock once the weather shifts! hink.gif There are some good trip recommends and some new discussion happening on this thread as well: Suggestion for kid backpacking?

Sahale and I went to Mt Rainier for a little hike to Mt Fremont the other day. She was so excited to go and "climb mountain with dad". She was jumping for joy as we started out. She walked close to 3 miles that day while I carried her over the snow and mud and at times when she was tired. It was a fun time watching her feel proud of herself for getting to hike. One of her highlights was watching the ants crawl along the trail!

Good job, Sahale! 3 miles is plenty respectable!

I have an 8 year old and this is his second season hiking. We have been out on 2 day hikes and 1 overnight hike this year. The first one was to Barclay and Eagle Lakes.
First hike of the season - Barclay and Eagle Lakes
First hike of the season - Barclay and Eagle Lakes
It was a good start because the hike to Barclay is pretty easy for a nice warm up before the steep climbs and boulder fields and some snow that took us to Eagle Lake.

Sometimes it is tough getting all 3 of us AND the lake in the background (at Eagle Lake)

It is only a 225 ft elevation to Barclay but another 1500 to Eagle. I believe the RT was 8.4 miles. The next trip was to Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Serene. This was a repeat hike. It was his very first hiking adventure last year.

It was pretty cool to look out and see the area where we hiked the previous week.

For lunch it was tasty PBJs with a view.

Last time we came up it was foggy so it was nice to enjoy a clear view of the lake and surrounding area.

It was also cool to see how much easier the hike was for him this year. Last year it was tough to keep him going near the end. This time he was his same goofy self the whole time.

I am not sure if it is 7.2 miles round trip including the extra mile RT to see Bridal Veil Falls or if it is 8.2. The elevation gain is listed as 2000 ft.

Most recently we went on an overnight trip. We left from the Deception Creek TH (Trail 1059).

We turned right at the Tonga Ridge Trail (1058). We hiked about 7.4 miles with an elevation gain of 3200 ft before we picked our a campsite.
Here is where I will be sleeping tonight!

The trip back to the car was much easier especially with D's "special bag" to keep him going.
Whatever it takes to keep him going, this time it was the "sleeping roll jet pack" to keep him powered up

Pretty proud of how well D is doing. It seems like he is learning to enjoy hiking as much as we do!

My Flora (3 3/4 years old) did her first climb on our trip "home" to Alaska a couple weeks back. I promised her a mountain climb so we made the obligatory climb for any Alaskan up Flattop. The most popular hike in all of Alaska, let's just call it the Mt. Si of Anchorage. We bailed on the final summit scramble (coming down would be a bit much for her) and settled on the saddle 100' below. I couldn't be prouder of Little Bean. She rocked it! She got tons of cheers and compliments from the other hikers. Normally a very cautious kid, she approached the climb with awesome confidence. Alaska's having the best summer ever. The weather couldn't have been better our entire trip. Distance: ~4mi RT Elevation gain: 1,300

Flora's turning into an awesome hiker. I can't wait to see what her wild little sister turns into (see below).

I forgot to mention we got a later start than expected due to a small backyard distraction as we were heading out the door.

Nice work, Flora! up.gif Go get her, Crazy Emma! up.gif The key to getting kids to hike a long ways is to line the trail with berries. Check out Park Butte.

We made it partway up to Longs Pass. Not the best trail for kids, but mine still enjoyed it and thought it was really beautiful. I'm pretty proud of them for how hard they hiked.

We've done a couple hikes with Nathan the last couple weeks. He LOVES it all right now, especially "WATERFALL! BIIIIG WATERFALL!!" He just hears rushing water and says, "go see it? go see it?" He also likes "big trees fall down" (big fallen trees) and "big mountain." First, Goat Lake...
Then, Otter Falls and Big Creek Falls...

I'm going to give the littles' thread a quick bump in a selfish attempt to get their bigs to post more adorable photos & stories to read while I'm home bound for a stretch. I know you've been out there exploring the world with your toddling trail goers or inquisitive tweens. And let's not forget to include those brave moms and dads taking their 'nearly adults' out beyond wifi into the Facebook free far reaches of the wilderness. Here's your dedicated pride page parents, post away!
