Four of us old guys decided to check out the conditions at Sunrise on Thursday. Hitting the trail at about 10 am, we meandered up to Frozen Lake & then onward to Fremont. The fremont trail is completely snow free. When we approached the lookout, we were hit by fierce wind from the north that lasted all day. We paused at the lookout for a few photos and then ducked below some rocks to get out of the wind for lunch.

After lunch we headed up Burroughs. The snow is almost completely gone from the 1st Burroughs trail & one large snowpatch remains up the 2nd.

After 2nd lunch on 2nd Burroughs, we decided to head back to Sunrise on the trail to Shadow Lake to keep out of the wind. There are a couple of snowpatches on the steepest sections that we pulled out our ice axes for. They're easy to cross but really exposed.

Thanks for the conditions report...and it's funny, I was just reading the trail conditions on the MRNP website and it says that as of 7/9 (so the day before your trip), the Burroughs trail was 50% snow covered and ice axes were recommended across several steep snow slopes that didn't have boot tracks. But you mentioned only one large snow patch -- that's quite the fast melt out! biggrin.gif

Opinions expressed here are my own.

Maybe they haven't stepped out of their office and looked. I was surprised that the road only opened a week ago and there was as little snow as there was. Spray Park still looks like it has lots of snow, though, from our vantage point. Grand Park looks about like what it was at the end of June last year with a few snow patches. We spoke to someone returning from an attempt to get to the Carbon River on the Wonderland Trail & they ran into lots of snow beyond Mystic Lake & they couldn't see a safe crossing of the Carbon.

Or a scare people away/conservative MRNP report.

Love hiking out of Sunrise. There's a native herd of mtn goats that frequent Burroughs, saw about 20 of them a few years ago right on the trail.

Great trip report. I have a feeling that Dege Peak is close to being snowfree as well. If that is the case I will take my wife to Dege Peak in the near future. up.gif up.gif
