A few friends and I decided to try Snowking Mountain this past weekend. What a gorgeous area! Started off Sat morning, parked at 1200ft which is where the road is blocked off. Along the road to 2400ft where a steep path goes up and up and up. Consistant snow starting at about 4800ft. Lots of opportunity to use map and compass after that.
Camped near lake 5442 with a fantastic view of Snowking.
Summited Sunday morning so as to have a leisurely summit stay to enjoy the views. Then after breaking camp out the way we came in, sort of, well it started that way but we decided to take a 'short cut' that cost us a few hours of bushwhacking as we failed to pick up the trail on the way down. Figured it out eventually and made it back to the road, not too far from where we left it, back down the road to the car and home. Did not see another soul all weekend.
Road to Nowhere (Snowking) Cool rocks along the way to Snowking Room with a view of Snowking Lake 5442, Snowking Snowking in the Evening Moon over tarn, Snowking Still a Long Way to Snowking Getting Closer to Snowking Final Rock Scramble to Snowking Summit Snowking Marker
Notes,
Snow level 4800ft
Ice axe, crampons, helmet
Camped on snow
Map and compass route finding skills highly recommended.
cheers,
L

I love that trip! It's a long way in but, as you said, so beautiful! Thanks for reminding me with the great pics!

Really like the half-melted lakes/tarns.
